Big Sandy Cemetery Listing

.........The Big Sandy Cemetery is located in eastern Madison County, Arkansas. My TICE and GARRISON relatives who settled in the area had come from Monroe and Washington County, Ohio in the late 1880s. The 1900 Census for Madison County, AR - Marble Township - indicates that many of the other people living in the township were born in Ohio or their parents were born in Ohio, so some of these people may have been neighbors in Ohio as well as in Arkansas.

.........On the first Sunday of June each year, Decoration services are held at Big Sandy...Many people come back to honor their ancestors by placing flowers on their grave and remembering them on that day. Some will arrive, place their flowers on the graves, say hello to others who are there, then leave.

.........For others, it is also a time of fellowship and visiting and they will spend most of the day there - many of the people who come will only see each other on that one day each year. A group of YARBROUGH descendants gather there each year for a family reunion.

.........Near 11:00 a.m., all who wish to will gather in the old school/church building, sing gospel songs and listen to a short sermon.

.........Around noon time, many will carry from their vehicles delicious dishes of food and place them on the old tables for everyone to share in an old-fashioned "dinner on the ground."

..........In my younger days, going to Big Sandy Decoration was a time of fun - a time to play under the big trees shading the grounds and visit with 2nd cousins that I saw only once a year. I did not realize at that time the history that was recorded there on that land with the tombstones of my Dad's father and mother, 2 sets of his grandparents and 1 set of his great-grandparents who made the journey from Washington County, OH to homestead land nearby, his aunts, uncles and cousins.

.........As we drove up the hillside today on the red clay road, my dad pointed out the place where the house used to stand that he and his siblings grew up in, where his grandfather's house once stood (the grandfather who told him stories of the Civil War in the evenings when my Dad, in his pre-teen years, stayed with them to help with their chores). When we reach the school house, he tells stories about his years spent in school in that same building, of the shortcut they took up the mountain when walking to school.

.........I have just returned from there today, tired and weary, but proud of the people who came before me to lay the foundation for my life.
